Medical assistants are trusted members of the healthcare team who have both administrative
and clinical responsibilities. You’ll work side-by-side with physicians, nurse practitioners,
and nurses, to provide patients with the highest quality care. Common clinical tasks
include taking vital signs, drawing blood, administering medications, preparing patients
for procedures, and completing laboratory tests. Medical assistants may also help
schedule appointments, verify insurance, and assist with billing and coding.

SCC’s Medical Assistant program prepares students to work as a multi-skilled health
professionals. This two-semester, hybrid program combines traditional classroom learning
with hands-on lab simulations and online coursework. In the fall, you’ll study in
the classroom and learn hands-on in our simulated lab space. In the spring, you’ll
complete a 160-hour clinical externship, gaining practical experience in a professional
setting.
When you graduate with your certificate of achievement, you’ll be eligibile to sit
for the national certification exam through American Medical Technologists. Successful
completion of the exam certifies you as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
The Medical Assisting (MDA) curriculum includes MDA-prefixed courses with Medical
Assisting-specific content, plus required HIM-prefixed courses covering general health
information management topics. The HIM content courses are presented in an online
format.
