8 tips to help you network like a pro

While some of us might thrive in social settings, others of us prefer to stay in a dark room and depend on social media to communicate.

Regardless of which group you associate with, everyone can benefit from a good network. Your Alumni Association is one good place to meet people. Finding common ground like where you went to college can be a great way to start a conversation.

The SCC Alumni Council is planning a happy hour event 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at Bemo’s restaurant in Cottleville.

Just for fun, and in preparation for this event, here are a few tips on networking.

Tip #1 Bring a friend. Taking a good buddy can make any experience way more fun, and a networking event is no different. Choose a friend who knows how to have fun and also be professional.

Tip #2 – Have some conversation starters in mind. That awkward moment when you’re face to face with someone and can’t think of anything to say can be avoided by having a few a few ideas of what to say to help you find some common ground. Ask the other person about his or her degree, major, or groups/organizations someone may have been involved in during college. Compliments, travel, technology and restaurants are also good conversation starters.

Tip #3 – Be ready with your elevator speech. It’s a short description of yourself explaining your current job or how you might benefit a company. You can put yours together in a few minutes, including your name, relevant skills, summary of experience and accomplishments.  SCC Career Services can help you if you need it (and they offer a great presentation at their Mix & Mingle event in the fall).

Tip #4 – Update your social media accounts. If you haven’t been on social media in a while, you may want to check to see that your job titles and other info are up to date. A social media connection often follows an initial conversation. In the professional world, connecting with someone on LinkedIn is much like exchanging a business card.

Tip #5 – Plan for what to wear. There is always more to a person than meets the eye, and your value is not defined by what you wear. Still, first impressions can make a difference. Sometimes event invitations will state the dress code that is requested for an event, and a simple web search can help you interpret what that means if you’re unsure. If by chance you’re looking for job, we’ve heard a good rule of thumb is to dress for the job you aspire to have.

Tip #6 – Choose your food and drink wisely. If you like to try new foods, awesome. If not, you may want to stick to what you know at a networking event. Having a glass of wine or a cocktail may seem natural for some, but may feel uncomfortable for others. Be true to yourself and know your limits.

Tip #7 – Relax and have fun. Showing up with a smile and a good attitude will never hurt and may be the only thing you need to help you make a great connection.

Tip #8 – Come to the Alumni Happy Hour scheduled for 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at Bemo’s restaurant in Cottleville.
