Partnership with Truman State University Provides Scholarships for SCC Students

SPECTRA program is for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math

At SCC, faculty members will select five students per semester to receive $500 scholarships to be applied to their first two years of coursework. Community college students who declare their interests in STEM subjects will receive targeted academic advising, enhanced career awareness materials and the opportunity to develop an academic plan to expedite transfer to Truman State University or another four-year school.

Scientists Prepared, Enriched and Challenged Through Research-based Activities (SPECTRA), is a five-year initiative funded by the National Science Foundation to increase the number of graduates in science, technology, engineering and math. Through this program, Truman State University will offer a variety of support to community college students while they take courses that prepare them for a baccalaureate program in a STEM field (regardless of major or intent to transfer to Truman State University).

“This really is a great opportunity for local high school students entering the community college,” said Chris Breitmeyer, dean of math, science and health at SCC. “We believe this program will generate more interest in these important subject areas, and will help students to be successful when they get out into the workforce. As we move forward, STEM disciplines are going to play a vital role in ensuring the economic security of our country.”

The SPECTRA program also will allow Truman State University to provide incoming students with opportunities for scholarships, tutoring, faculty-mentored research and participation in career and internship awareness activities. Upon completion of the SPECTRA program, students will have the background and preparation needed to complete a degree or pursue a career that relates to science and mathematics.

Truman State University’s SPECTRA program is funded by a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Proactive Recruitment in Science and Mathematics (PRISM) program.
