Students, Community Attend Annual Democracy Days Forum at SCC

Published: 09/22/2009

Democracy Days was held Sept. 14-17 on the college’s campus in Cottleville. Ten free educational seminars covered topics such as civil rights, the U.S. economy, and the difference between Chinese and American views of democracy. In true democratic fashion, the seminars allowed time for questions, comments, and dissent from the audience.

Highlights included an international student panel on democracy, a discussion on Pakistan led by an international student from Afghanistan, and a discussion on the origins of American myths.

Susheel Bibbs, producer of the 2007 film documentary, “Meet Mary Pleasant,” about the 19th century African-American activist, spoke to students and showed her documentary. “Meet Mary Pleasant” was sponsored by SCC’s Multicultural Programming Committee.

The mission of SCC’s Democracy Days forum is to explore the history, health, and functioning of democracy in America and the world at large.
