Unlike many 18-year-olds, Heather Guelbert knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life when she graduated high school.
“I knew I wanted to work with animals ever since I was little. People have always told me I was good with animals,” she recalled.
In high school she participated in a community learning program where she shadowed the workers at a local animal shelter. Heather knew, even more so than before, that she had found her calling. It wasn’t long after she started the program that she was volunteering before school and returning after school to watch surgeries.
After high school, Heather began working as a veterinary technician at an animal clinic. It was then that she started her college career at SCC.
“I really liked the personal attention I got at SCC. All of my teachers knew me by name."
Now studying veterinary medicine at the University of Missouri, Heather plans to finish up her bachelor’s degree in animal science and then go on to vet school.
Heather, who was recognized at the annual Mizzou luncheon honoring Missouri Community College Association transfers, is proud to be a SCC alum.
