SCC to host International Education Week events Nov. 14-15

St. Charles Community College will host a series of events to celebrate International Education Week Tuesday-Wednesday, Nov. 14-15. Events are free and open to the public. 

“International Education Week is a great opportunity to not only highlight opportunities for students to study abroad but also to discuss global issues right here on our campus,” said Kelley Pfeiffer, SCC director of student life. “Many students and community members may not have the exposure to the foreign films we show or the topics that are discussed, and this is an annual event that broadens the perspective of all who attend.”

Tuesday, Nov. 14

All events are held in the SSB auditorium unless listed otherwise. 

10 a.m. | Peace Corps: Making a Difference in the World, with Joe Zucchini, field based recruiter for the Peace Corps.

11:30 a.m. | Study Abroad: Canterbury and Dublin with Virginia Guneyli and Karen Jones

2:30 p.m. | A Week in Quebec Province: SCC Students Discuss Study Tour Experience  

6:30 p.m. | A screening of the film ‘Wadjda,’ presented by Laura Al-Albani, a part-time Arabic foreign language faculty member at SCC. Free popcorn will be provided.

An enterprising Saudi girl signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle that has captured her interest. Wadjda was the first movie made in Saudi Arabia by a female director.

Wednesday, Nov. 15

All events are held in the SSB auditorium unless listed otherwise.

10:30-11: 30 a.m. | SSB lounge | Oh, What a Sweet World. Stop by and enjoy candies from around the world! 

11:30 a.m. | International Student Culture Shock Presentation and Roundtable 

1 p.m. | DACA Panel: SCC is hosting a panel of regional experts to discuss the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Regional experts speaking on the panel include: Andrew Bloomberg, an attorney who works on immigration law matters including DACA; Cassandra Hagan, SCC financial aid manager; Dawn Huffman, chair of the English Language Institute at SCC; Felipe Martinez, immigrant student advisor with the Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis; and Amanda Tello, program coordinator at Missouri Immigrant and Refugee Advocates (MIRA). The panel will be moderated by Paul Roesler, SCC professor of political science. 

6:30 p.m. | A screening of the film ‘Train to Busan,’ presented by Dr. Minsoo Kang, associate professor in European history at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL). Free popcorn will be provided. 

While a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.
