SCC Orchestra Concert to Feature Violin Soloist May 5

Published: 04/21/2011

As the featured violin soloist in the SCC Orchestra, Glenn, of Rolla, Mo., will perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. “This piece has become one of the most respected masterpieces in the violin repertoire, and it has been played by legendary violinists,” said Mary Sweetin, SCC adjunct professor of music. “It possesses a wide emotional vocabulary, ranging from the brilliant and triumphant to the heartbreaking and melancholy.”

Sweetin has been working with Glenn on the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto for more than a year, and Glenn says her experience has been similar to running a marathon. “Once you start working on a piece of music like this, you have to keep going,” said Glenn. “And you have to be careful not to injure yourself along the way, because it’s an adventure.”

Glenn also described the work as daunting, yet gorgeous, and that it truly conquers the essence of the violin. “In rehearsal, Michelle has absolutely nailed the piece,” said Sweetin. “She plays the violin better than I ever have or ever will, and I think she’s one of the best violinists in the Midwest.”

Glenn has been playing the violin since she was eight years old, and she has been studying with Sweetin at SCC for two years. Glenn’s mother, who is also a member of the SCC Orchestra, introduced Glenn to Sweetin because she was looking for a new teacher.

“Working with Mary has been my best experience yet,” said Glenn. “I love her attention to detail and enthusiasm for music. She has a way of bringing everyone’s talents and strengths together and helping us to get better.”

The SCC Orchestra will also perform Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8 at the concert. Deberah Haferkamp will serve as guest conductor for this performance.
