SCC’s Young Artist Training Program (YATP) provides elevated instruction in performing arts to students age 5-18. Our coursework in theatre, music, and musical theatre is designed to complement your child’s natural progression as a young performing artist, building on skills they learn in school.

YATP offers unique workshops, summer camps, and intensives year-round, with diverse performing arts professionals to strengthen your child’s natural abilities. Our comprehensive training prepares students for auditions, expands their knowledge of the theatre, and creates a meaningful network for artistic youth in our community.

Fantasy Stage Makeup
Theatrical Design
Tuesdays; 6:00-7:15 pm Thursdays; 6:00-7:15 pm
This course introduces students to the art of fantasy stage makeup for theatrical performance. Students will learn basic makeup techniques, tool use, color theory, and design principles while exploring creative styles such as character, creature, and stylized makeup. Emphasis is placed on safety, hygiene, and how makeup choices support character and storytelling on stage. Through hands-on practice and creative projects, students will develop foundational skills and confidence in using fantasy makeup for performance and design. This introductory course provides students with a foundational understanding of technical theatre and the collaborative role design plays in live performance. Students will explore the basics of scenic, lighting, costume, sound, and properties design, as well as stagecraft, safety, and production processes. Through hands-on projects and practical applications, students will learn how technical elements support storytelling, character, and mood on stage. The course emphasizes collaboration, problem-solving, and creative thinking, preparing students for further study and participation in theatrical production.
   
Actor's Studio 1: The Basics
Acting Techniques
Saturdays; 9:00-10:15 am Saturdays; 10:30-11:45 am
This actor studio course introduces students to the basic skills and concepts of theatre and performance. Students will explore fundamental acting techniques, stage terminology, ensemble work, and rehearsal practices through exercises, scenes, and performance activities. Emphasis is placed on building confidence, collaboration, and an understanding of how actors contribute to storytelling on stage. The course is designed for beginning theatre students and provides a supportive foundation for further study in acting and theatre arts. This acting course introduces students to two influential acting styles: Stanislavski and Meisner. Students will explore the basic principles of each approach, focusing on truthful behavior, emotional connection, and listening and response. Through exercises, scene work, and guided practice, students will learn how these techniques support realistic and engaging performances. The course emphasizes foundational skills, collaboration, and applying acting methods to scripted work.
   
Actor's Studio 2: Monologues
 
Saturdays; 10:30-11:45 am  
This introductory actor studio course focuses on basic monologue work as a way to build foundational acting skills. Students will learn how to select appropriate monologues, understand the given circumstances of a script, and make clear acting choices. Through guided rehearsal, performance, and supportive feedback, students will practice voice, movement, and emotional expression in a low-pressure studio setting. The course is designed to help beginning actors build confidence, stage presence, and an understanding of monologue preparation for auditions and classroom performance.

Intro to Scenic Design
Tuesdays; 6:00-7:15 pm Thursdays; 7:30-8:45 pm
This course introduces students to the art of fantasy stage makeup for theatrical performance. Students will learn basic makeup techniques, tool use, color theory, and design principles while exploring creative styles such as character, creature, and stylized makeup. Emphasis is placed on safety, hygiene, and how makeup choices support character and storytelling on stage. Through hands-on practice and creative projects, students will develop foundational skills and confidence in using fantasy makeup for performance and design. This introductory course explores the creative and technical foundations of scenic design for theatre. Students will learn the principles of visual storytelling through set composition, drafting, model building, color theory, and collaboration with directors and production teams. Emphasis is placed on developing conceptual ideas, communicating designs through sketches and renderings, and understanding the practical processes of bringing scenery from page to stage. In addition to classroom learning, students will gain hands-on production experience by contributing to the technical elements of the YPT Jr. Show. This opportunity allows students to apply their skills in a real rehearsal and performance environment, preparing them for more advanced design and technical theatre work.
   
Acting Techniques
Choreography
Saturdays; 9:00-10:15 am Saturdays; 10:30-11:45 am
This acting course introduces students to two influential acting styles: Stanislavski and Meisner. Students will explore the basic principles of each approach, focusing on truthful behavior, emotional connection, and listening and response. Through exercises, scene work, and guided practice, students will learn how these techniques support realistic and engaging performances. The course emphasizes foundational skills, collaboration, and applying acting methods to scripted work. This choreography course introduces students to the fundamentals of creating and staging movement for musical theatre. Students will explore basic choreographic concepts such as rhythm, storytelling through movement, spacing, and ensemble work. As a central project, students will collaborate to create and develop choreography for Shrek the Musical, gaining hands-on experience working with music, characters, and staging needs of a full production. The course emphasizes creativity, teamwork, and how choreography supports character, story, and performance on stage.
   
Theatre Marketing
 
Saturdays; 1:00-2:15 pm  
This course introduces students to the principles and practices of theatre marketing, focusing on how and why effective marketing is essential to the success of a production. Students will learn how to plan, execute, and evaluate marketing strategies for a theatrical show, including audience targeting, branding, promotion, and community engagement. As part of the course, students will actively collaborate to help market the junior production of the season, gaining hands-on, real-world experience. The course also emphasizes professional self-marketing, guiding students in how to present themselves as theatre artists through resumes and portfolios. By the end of the course, students will understand how marketing supports both productions and individual careers in the theatre industry.
