That '80s Run, the most tubular health and fitness event in town, is coming to St. Charles Community College on Saturday, April 30, 2016.

This colorful, community event features a 10K and 5K chip timed by Fleet Feet, 1-Mile Fun Run and a free Health and Wellness Expo on race day. And break out your boom box and spandex, because there will be rad prizes for the most far out costumes!

The totally bodacious T-shirt design comes in adult and youth sizes (while supplies last). Race entry fee also includes refreshments and tickets for prize baskets. One runner will win a $1,000 scholarship to SCC. Entrants in the 5K and 10K races (ages 18 and older) will be automatically entered into a drawing for the scholarship.

Online registration for the early discount will close at 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2016. No refunds. Event proceeds will be used to fund health and wellness initiatives and scholarships at SCC.

Run Details
  • The 10K is for runners only (please, no walkers in the 10K).
  • Jogging strollers are not allowed in the 10K race, but are permitted in the 5K.

  • Medals are also awarded to the first-place male and female finishers in these categories (Current SCC Student; SCC Alumni; SCC Employee).
  • Finisher medals for all paid registrants.
  • Medals to the top three 1-Mile Fun Run male and female finishers in these age groups (6 and under; 7-8; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14; 15 and over).

Note: Dogs are prohibited on college properties (with the exception of support animals, see SCC Board Policy 303.1). SCC is a tobacco-free campus (see SCC Board Policy 482.1).

NOTE: Runners changing from the 1-Mile Fun Run to the 5K (or 10K) will need to pay the additional registration fee.

Runners/walkers with a history of asthma should bring their inhalers with them on race day. Nursing students will be available at the first aid station to assist anyone with medical conditions.
Race Routes
The race routes are in the process of being updated, but will be similar to the 2015 routes. Route maps will be posted as soon as the routes are finalized.

10K Race Route – The 10K route starts and ends on campus, and part of the route continues off campus with flat to rolling terrain through rural Cottleville. The 10K starts at 7:30 a.m. and timing ends at 9 a.m. (Please, no walkers in the 10K.)

5K Race Route – The 5K route starts and ends on campus, and part of the route continues off campus through rural Cottleville. The 5K starts at 7:30 a.m. and timing ends at 9 a.m.

1-Mile Fun Run Route – There is no official timing for the 1-Mile Fun Run. Winners are determined by the order they cross the finish line (by age category).
Health and Wellness Expo
The Health and Wellness Expo is open from 7:30-10:30 a.m. in the Student Center. The Expo will feature more than 40 exhibits that include fitness, health and recreation information as well as demonstrations, screenings and displays. Entry into the Health and Wellness Expo is free and open to the public. Runners pay a fee to participate in That '80s Run events.
Costume Awards and Prize Baskets
In addition to tubular prizes for the most radical '80s runner outfits, you can enter for chances to win some awesome prize baskets on race day. Prize baskets will be displayed at packet pickup on Friday, April 29, and near the info tent on race day. All race participants will receive two free tickets to enter in the prize basket drawings, and additional tickets will be available for purchase at the cost of $1 for two tickets. Must be present to win.
$1,000 Scholarship to SCC
One runner in That '80s Run will win the $1,000 Brenda Hollrah Memorial Scholarship to St. Charles Community College. Entrants in the 5K and 10K races (ages 18 and older) will be automatically entered into a drawing for the scholarship.

Scholarship FAQs

When will you announce the winner?
The scholarship recipient will be announced at the awards ceremony on the day of the event, April 30, 2016.

Do you have to be present to win?
No, you do not need to be present to win the scholarship. If you are not present at the time of the award, you will be contacted by a member of the race committee.

How long is the scholarship valid?
The scholarship expires June 15, 2017.

Can I give the scholarship away to a friend or family member?
Yes, a one-time transfer to a current or prospective student is allowed, but it must be used by the expiration date regardless of the date of transfer.

Will I get $1,000 in cash?
No, the scholarship will be applied to the recipient’s account at St. Charles Community College only.

What can this scholarship be used for?
The scholarship can be applied to tuition or fees at SCC or used in the SCC Bookstore to purchase textbooks.

What happens if the scholarship goes unused?
Any unused portion will be returned and used for future awarding.

Can the scholarship be used for Continuing Education courses?
No, the scholarship must be used for credit courses at SCC.

Are there any additional requirements to use the scholarship?
In order to receive the scholarship, you must enroll in credit classes at SCC. You may also be asked to have your picture taken to promote future scholarship opportunities.
Health and Wellness Grants
That '80s Run is presented by the Run Committee at St. Charles Community College. In 2006, the committee began offering health and wellness grants, up to $1,000 per grant, for college wellness projects.

Since 2006, the college's Run Committee has funded 55 health and wellness grants totaling $42,035.23

2015 Health and Wellness Grants Awarded
Proceeds from the 2015 event funded 13 wellness projects in whole or in part, totaling $9,102.12:
  • Alcohol/Drug Prevention event, submitted by Student Activities.
  • Bicycle repair fund for the community bikes on campus, submitted by Human Resources.
  • De-Stress Fest supplies for finals week events, submitted by Student Activities.
  • Drinking fountain replacement/bottle filling machine, submitted by Green Team.
  • Upgrade the Child Development Center (CDC)’s self-serve materials to accommodate Eat Smart regulations.
  • Fitness equipment for Pilates classes and recreational activities, submitted by the Continuing Education Department.
  • Legos for creativity spaces in the library, submitted by the library.
  • Life Fitness treadmill for the Fitness Center, submitted by the Physical Education department.
  • Mental Health & Suicide Prevention speaker, submitted by Student Activities.
  • Non-Violent Communication Workshop, submitted by Human Resources.
  • Sand volleyball court equipment replacement, submitted by Student Activities.
  • Replacement of soccer balls to meet NJCAA requirements, submitted by the Women’s Soccer Team.
  • Repairs to the Storybook Walk, submitted by College Advancement & Planning.
Projects Funded in Previous Years
2014 – Disk Golf equipment for disk golf classes and recreational activities; butterfly garden boulder painting project; Alive! Mental Health Fair and Suicide Prevention Tour; alcohol and drug prevention programming; and play/gym equipment for College for All Kids camps.
2013 – Nutrition education books and gardening equipment for the Child Development Center (CDC); supplies for the SCC Community Garden plots; StepUP Bystander Intervention Program promotional items; mental health programming; yoga stabilizing blocks and pilates rings for classes; and SCC employee wellness programming.
2012 – Mental health programming; SCC employee wellness programming; treadmill for the Fitness Center; tricycles and child-sized bike helmets for the Child Development Center (CDC); ten guitars for SCC Student Veterans Organization to bring the Six String Heroes therapeutic music program on campus for student veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); and kickboxing equipment for SCC fitness classes.
2011 – Weights and rack for fitness classes; SCC employee wellness programming, including the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) challenge; guest speaker, equipment and supplies to expand the Child Development Center's garden project started in 2010, teaching CDC children and families about plants, health and child nutrition.
2010 – Gardening equipment and supplies for the Child Development Center (CDC) to start up their garden project to educate CDC children and families about plants, health and nutrition; SCC employee wellness programming; SCC Library's pre-finals week project helping students studying for finals make healthier snack choices; fitness videos that SCC students and employees can check out from the SCC Library; Sunbrella table umbrella to provide protection from the sun; and resistance water bells and bag for water exercise classes offered through the SCC Continuing Education Department.
2009 – Health literacy textbooks and classroom materials for the SCC Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program; BOSU half ball balance trainers, rack and DVDs; and SCC employee wellness programming.
2008 – Portable FM listening transmitters and headsets for training programs, tours, walking lectures, day trips and Elderhostel programs offered through SCC Continuing Education; professional sound system for Room 203 in the College Center, in which fitness classes such as aerobics, step and dance are held.
2007 – Medication cart for SCC nursing simulation lab; yoga blankets for yoga and pilates classes; dumbbells and rack for fitness classes; College Response program kits, including online screening tools for depression, eating disorders and alcohol offered by Student Development, SCC Mental Health Services and Physical Education; bench for soccer field; and cougar mascot costume for Scooter McCougar's appearance at college events.
2006 – Hydraulic patient lift/sling, pulse oximeter and multi-sounds trainer for SCC nursing simulation lab; medicine balls, yoga bricks and straps for yoga and pilates fitness classes; fans, sound system and speakers for the Fitness Center; athletic warm-ups for the SCC Soccer Club (Note: SCC Soccer is now an intercollegiate sport); First aid kits and water bottles for the SCC Roller Hockey Club.

That ‘80s Run attracts a large crowd every year with a health and wellness expo that's free and open to all. Reach more than 1,000 runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts at this annual community event.

Exhibit and sponsorship proceeds are used to fund St. Charles Community College wellness projects and a $1,000 scholarship to SCC, as well as advertising for the event.
