Welcome to the Adult Education and Literacy Department page of the St. Charles Community College website!


St. Charles Community College coordinates a four-county Adult Education and Literacy program in St. Charles, Warren, Lincoln and Pike counties to teach basic reading, math and writing skills, to prepare people to take the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) and to assist non-native speakers in gaining English proficiency. Free day and evening classes are available.

Literacy Tutoring

St. Charles Community College's Adult Education program provides group instruction, as well as one-on-one tutoring assistance within our HSE and ESL classrooms. Students requiring special assistance are referred through our class orientation and registration process. Students at all skill levels are encouraged to become part of our program.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers interested in working with High School Equivalency preparation, English as a Second Language, or adult literacy students should call 636-922-8504. Volunteers are needed to tutor students individually and/or in the classroom, to provide student orientation assistance, to help teachers with classroom activities and to assist with administrative duties. Training and materials are provided. Volunteer tutors learn how to assess students' abilities, how to select appropriate instructional materials, and how to use the materials to provide maximum progress for the students.

Teaching Opportunities

Any available positions for teaching Adult Education and Literacy classes (High School Equivalency preparation and/or English as a Second Language) will be posted on the employment page of the St. Charles Community College website. Daytime and evening classes meet in St. Charles, Warren, Lincoln and Pike counties.

AEL instructors are required to have a bachelor's degree. Proficiency in a second language is not required for ESL instructors. AEL certification is required and is provided through the program. Teachers are required to maintain their AEL certification by attending 20 hours of professional development in-service training each year. All positions are part-time.

Substitute teachers are also needed. The minimum academic requirement for substitute teachers is 60 college credit hours.

Disability Support Services

Reasonable accommodations will be provided for persons defined as disabled under the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Students must initiate a request for such services and must provide written disability documentation from qualified professionals. Requests must be made 1-8 weeks prior to attendance at the first class. In some instances, it may be necessary for the student to delay registration or to withdraw from the course to allow the college ample time to provide appropriate accommodations. Scholarship Information

All HSE and English as a Second Language classes offered through the Adult Education and Literacy Department are free. HSE and ESL students who enroll in credit classes at SCC may be eligible to apply for scholarships through the college. For scholarship information, go to
