EMBRACING A HEALTHY FUTURE
SCC students graduate qualified to enroll in upper-level
coursework at comparable Exercise Science programs at four-year institutions.
With increasing obesity, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and medical costs associated with inactivity, the importance of highly qualified fitness professionals has never been greater. Better health and fitness translate to fewer sick days, lower insurance rates, and an overall improvement in personal and professional lives. All of this means that the need for qualified professionals will continue to rise. With the growth of the fitness industry, there was a need for a prestigious and credible personal training program. Personal trainers are health and fitness professionals who use an individualized approach to assess, motivate, educate, and train clients regarding their health and fitness needs.
Personal trainers design safe and effective exercise science programs, guide clients in achieving their personal health and fitness goals, and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Recognizing their own area of expertise, personal trainers also refer clients to other healthcare professionals when appropriate. As a personal trainer, you will be part of the preventive health care team working in health and fitness clubs, wellness centers both public and private, recreation facilities, hospital and rehabilitation centers, corporate fitness, personal training studios, resorts, in-home training, sports training and athletic performance facilities, college fitness centers and private industry.
Graduates of SCC’s Exercise Science Program are prepared to take a national personal trainer certifying examination given by a few organizations that set the standards in personal training. Along with the exercise science program, the national certification provides evidence of competence within the field of exercise science and qualifies graduates to plan and implement exercise programs for healthy individuals or those who have medical clearance to exercise.
The exercise science program facilitates motivation and adherence as well as develops and administers programs designed to enhance muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, and/or any of the motor skill related components of physical fitness—i.e. balance, coordination, and reaction time, to name a few.
