GLS 101 - Extra Credit Opportunities

Extra Credit Opportunities For Global Studies (GLS 101) Students

Why do extra credit?

  • There are two reasons why every student should do extra credit. First, sometimes there are questions on the quizzes that you find confusing (as hard as I try to write clear questions, I don't always succeed) and this allows you to help "make up" some of those missed points. There's enough extra credit to make up for one "tough" question on every quiz. Second, everyone has a "bad" day now and then and these points allow you to make up for one or two bad quizzes.

What is each assignment worth?

  • Each assignment is worth a maximum of 5 points; you may earn up to 10 points.
  • Remember, the extra paper is a "bonus" extra credit, and does not count towards your 10 point maximum.

How do I submit the extra credit?

  • Submit all extra credit using Moodle/Canvas (copied and pasted into a Moodle email). Any assignments due by the Final Exam must be submitted in Moodle BEFORE the beginning of the exam.

Extra Credit Options

1. On-Campus Event (varies by semester)

Attend one of the following on-campus events/lectures (will be updated) & write a short summary of the discussion including one or two things you learned or found interesting in the presentations: (1/2 - 1 typed page)

  • Attend one (1) of the Global Days lecture on February 26 & 27 (times & places TBA)
    • note: this does not include any events we attend as a class
    • write a short summary & one or two things you found interesting or learned from it
  • Note: you may attend 2 separate events & do 2 short papers for up to 5 points each

2. Healthcare Reform -- Due by the Midterm

View Roesler's discussion of the 2010 Health Care Reform Bill (found on Roesler's homepage) and list (based on the discussion) the following:

  • one reason why supporters want health care reform
  • one thing that is NOT in the bill
  • explain the 2012 Supreme Court ruling regarding either the Medicaid expansion or the Mandate
  • one thing that happened in 2010
  • one thing that happens in 2014 and
  • one tool used to pay for the plan

3. Blog Extra Credit: Go to my blog -- http://paulroesler.tumblr.com/

Note: not all blog posts will relate to this class.

  • In my blog, find a post from the last few months that relates to this class.
  • Write a brief (1/2 page) summary of the article in the post, including the main point(s) of the article and the webpage link to the article. Explain the tone of the article (i.e. does it simply state facts or does the author make a point or have a message/point of view). If the author is making a point, what is it? (Note: if the article/clip is a comedic look/spoof of an issue, be sure to research & explain the issue it is making fun of.) Finally, explain how the article relates to this class (specifically, which chapter/lecture).

4. Carbon & Climate Change -- due by the Final Exam

Watch this NPR/PBS series on Carbon (especially parts three, Four & five). How does breaking Carbon lead to civilization? Give an example of how breaking Carbon bonds are used to supply energy. How does this process lead to more CO2? What "naturally" reduces CO2 (also called "carbon sinks")? Discuss other options for reducing CO2, such as Carbon Sequestration & Carbon Scrubbing.

Other opportunities may arise throughout the semester
