Reaching a goal, inspiring others
“If I can do it, you can do it,” Sue said.
That’s the inspiring message this mother of four and grandmother of 12 shares with her grandchildren and others after accomplishing what seemed to her to be impossible until now: earning the High School Equivalency credential so that she can go on to get her associate degree.
“I’m so blessed to have this opportunity to further my education, and I’m thankful to finally be in a position to be able to do it,” Sue said.
Sue was among nearly 100 others who earned the High School Equivalency credential this year in SCC’s Adult Education and Literacy Program. She participated in the AEL Recognition Ceremony on June 7, which recognizes students earning the HSE or U.S. Citizenship, along with achievement in English as a Second Language.
Taking small steps
The demands of family, work and life in general kept her busy, but Sue knew deep down that there was more for her. It was when she was working as a bookkeeper that she began to realize she had more to offer. As she started to enjoy her work and became better at it, she also became aware there was more for her to learn.
Now with four children and 12 grandchildren, responding to that inner voice telling her to pursue her education became more than just about herself. She also wanted to show her family – especially her grandchildren – it is possible to reach your dreams, despite obstacles that may get in the way.
With the support of her family, she found the courage to enroll in SCC’s High School Equivalency preparation program.
Reaching her goal
In time, Sue was able to complete SCC’s preparation program and to pass the HiSET exam. She credits the teachers and staff at SCC for helping her along the way, from understanding the material to dealing with anxiety before the exam.
Her family was cheering for her at the recognition ceremony, including some of her grandchildren.
“I want to set an example for my grandchildren and show them that it is possible to fulfill a dream,” Sue said. “It is also my hope that my experience can help others to believe in themselves and accomplish their own goals.”
SCC Adult Education & Literacy
The Adult Education and Literacy program offers basic reading, math and writing skills to prepare people for the high school equivalency exam, college and career. The grant-funded, non-credit program served 845 students this year through day and evening classes offered in four counties (St. Charles, Warren, Lincoln and Pike) at no cost to students.
