Developing an 'app'etite for STEM
Published: 02/27/2018
Using technology to create real-world solutions, students are gaining a competitive advantage and the skills they need for the technology jobs of tomorrow.
With STEM week in March, we'd like to recognize students who are pursuing their education in science, technology, engineering and math.
Trey is one of them. He is collaborating with classmates to develop a mobile app for a computer science conference to replace a printed version.
Trey said he likes the project because he knows his future employers are looking for work he did on actual projects, and not just what he learned in textbooks. His goal is to eventually work for a high-level gaming company. Soon he’ll have an Associate of Science from SCC and will transfer to a four-year university to get a Bachelor of Science.
“The app will allow users to select sessions they would like to attend and save the selections to their own personal conference schedule,” said Rex McKanry, professor of computer science at SCC. “It will also help users find local hotels and restaurants.”
The mobile application is for the Consortium of Computer Science in Colleges: Plains Region Conference. Meanwhile, students studying web design are re-designing the website for the Consortium.
SCC’s Computer Science program offers Associate of Applied Science degrees in Computer Programming, Cyber Security, Database Management and a number of other degrees and certificates. For more information, contact McKanry at rmckanry@stchas.edu.
