SCC’s Center Stage Theatre announces productions for its upcoming season

Published: 06/28/2016

St. Charles Community College’s Center Stage Theatre has announced its lineup for the 2016-17 season. The season includes five shows of varying genres.

The first play of the season is The Glass Menagerie. The Glass Menagerie is a poignant story, set in the late 1930s, of an aging southern belle and her family trapped in a world of illusions, stifled dreams and quiet desperation. This classic play by Tennessee Williams, who lived in St. Louis, is based on his own life and experiences and is credited with being the play that launched his successful career. Auditions will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 22-23 in the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building theater on the SCC campus. Performances will be Sept. 28-Oct. 2.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Center Stage Theatre’s second play of the season, is a Tony-award winning play. Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up, but their peace is disturbed when their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in unannounced with her new boy toy, Spike. Also on the scene are a sassy cleaning woman who can predict the future and a lovely young aspiring actress. A weekend of rivalry, regret and raucousness begins, eventually leading to threats to sell the family home. Auditions will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 3-4 in the SCC Fine Arts Building, Room 110. Performances will be Nov. 16-20.

Center Stage Theatre’s first show of 2017, A Doll’s House, is a classic drama about marriage. The story focuses on a controlling husband, Torvald Helmer, and his submissive wife Nora, who, when their idealized home life collapses, comes to the realization that she must finally close the door on her husband, children and life in “a doll’s house” in order to find and live as her true self. Nora’s ultimate rejection of a smothering marriage shocked theatre-goers of the late 1800s and opened new horizons for playwrights and their audiences. Auditions will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 17-18 in the FAB theater at SCC. Performances will be March 1-5, 2017.

Follow us down the rabbit hole when Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland takes the stage. During this contemporary adaptation of Alice’s adventures, you can expect the time-honored cast of the usual characters, nonsensical interpersonal exchanges and a Jefferson Airplane-influenced soundtrack. Auditions will be at 7 p.m. March 6-7 in the SCC Fine Arts Building, Room 110. Performances will be April 19-23, 2017.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown wraps up Center Stage Theatre’s 2016-2017 season. This revival of the original 1967 musical is a fresh approach to the comic book world of Charles Schulz. All your favorite characters are here: Charlie Brown, Sally, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder and even Snoopy as they experience “an average day in the life of Charlie Brown.” It really is just that – a day made up of little moments picked from various comic strips and set to music. Come see Charlie and the gang battle with kites, book reports, baseball games, Valentine’s Day and childhood crushes before finally realizing what true happiness is all about. Auditions will be at 7 p.m. May 23-24 and at 6 p.m. May 25 in the FAB theater at SCC. Performances will be July 26-30, 2017.

All shows will be presented in the FAB theater at the SCC campus, located at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville.

Tickets are free to SCC students with ID, or $8 general admission and $6 seniors, veterans and students and can be purchased online at stchastickets.com or over the phone at 636-922-8050.
