SCC's American Theatre Festival announces upcoming productions

The American Theatre Festival, a partnership of the History, English and Theater departments at SCC, is dedicated to keeping national heritage alive.

The Belle of Amherst” depicts the life of Emily Dickenson (1830-1886), one of America’s most celebrated poets. Set in Dickenson’s Amherst, Mass., home, the play weaves her poetry, diaries and letters into scenes of her domestic life. Performances will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 15-16; 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17; 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18; and 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. Kate Fitzgerald stars as Emily Dickenson. 

“A Women Called Truth” chronicles the life of Sojourner Truth, famous abolitionist and women’s rights advocate. Combining depictions of her life with slave songs and spirituals of the time period, the play celebrates the life and work of a woman who overcame injustice to become one of the most important figures in the American abolitionist movement. Performances will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15; 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16; 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17; 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. The cast includes Lakeetha Blakeney (Sojourner Truth), Rebecca Boyd (ensemble/chorus), LaQuesha Harris (first lady/chorus), Tim Harrison (second man), Austin Hill (first man) and Baily Rough (second lady).

Tickets are $6 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens and students; and free for SCC students with a valid I.D.
