SCC to Host Mental Health Programming Events

“Mental health is not something that people normally focus on when thinking about overall wellness,” said Kelley Pfeiffer, coordinating counselor of student activities. “It is just as important as physical health. We are hosting these events because it is our goal is to improve the overall heath and wellness of our students and community.”

The events, which will be held in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building, include:

Binge Drinking – What’s the Fuss?, Speaker

Noon Monday, March 11 – This interactive presentation will highlight binge drinking, the impact of alcohol on the brain and other physical affects, both long and short term. Kathi McKenzie, of the National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, will give the presentation. It will include tips on how to help friends and/or roommates who are in an alcohol-related emergency situation as well as how to talk to them when concerned about their use. 

“Bully,” Film

6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20 – The film “Bully” is a 2011 documentary film about bullying in U.S. schools. The film, directed by Lee Hirsch, follows the lives of five students who face bullying on a daily basis.

Prescription Medications and Synthetic Drugs

Noon Monday, April 8 – Tina Hoester, SCC Bridgeway mental health counselor, will speak about prescription medications and synthetic drugs.
