Published: 11/08/2012

SCC student Angela Peacock received the MCCA Student Leadership Award. She helped establish a student veterans organization on campus last year and is currently serving as the group’s president. She is the only designated peer mentor for the Wounded Warrior Project in the St. Louis metro area and she and her service dog, GI Joe, do presentations on combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder around campus.

Lieutenant Commander Tina Cox received the MCCA Distinguished Alumni Award. The award was presented in recognition of LCDR Cox’s outstanding achievements since leaving St. Charles Community College. LCDR Cox, of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, is a perinatal clinical nurse specialist and the division officer for the immunization and administration clinics for recruit training at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center.  She has received the Navy Commendation Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and two National Defense Medals.  She has served on bases throughout the U.S., was a tent nurse in Kuwait, and headed up the labor and delivery department on base in Okinawa. Cox also received SCC’s Distinguished Alumni Award in May.

Heather McDorman, SCC vice president for marketing and communications, received the MCCA Senior Service Award. The award was presented in recognition of McDorman’s service to SCC and to the mission of community colleges throughout the state. McDorman joined SCC in 1989, when she was hired to be the assistant to the director of public information. She has been promoted several times since then and today she is the college’s vice-president for marketing and communications. During McDorman’s time at SCC, she has headed up campus committees and overseen major projects including launching a unified branding initiative, implementing a strategic marketing plan, developing a crisis communication plan, redesigning the college’s website and making SCC a fixture in the social media world. McDorman has also been a leader in her profession at the national level. She is very active in the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, a group that she was president of in 2010-11.
