SCC to Celebrate Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day Nov. 14

Published: 11/09/2012

GIS Day is an annual global event that showcases GIS technologies and demonstrates how they impact everyday life. SCC will join more than 2,000 schools and organizations that will host GIS Day events in more than 90 countries. The free event is open to GIS professionals in the St. Charles County area and any person interested in learning about GIS technologies.

“GIS Day offers an opportunity to learn how cities and businesses can become more efficient by using mapping technology to pinpoint problems that need to be fixed,” said Ellen Wilson, SCC professor of geography. “And it provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.”

Local GIS users, such as St. Charles City and County governments, St. Charles Alarm and Dispatch (911), the Missouri Botanical Garden and Lambert Airport will attend, and a televised GIS discussion will be featured at SCC’s GIS Day event. Makers of GIS/GPS equipment, such as ESRI, will also be present. Informative demonstrations and an extensive and detailed map composition gallery will also be featured.

GIS is a computer system used for storing, editing and analyzing geographical information. The technology can be used for several purposes: scientific investigations, map-making, criminology and many more. The goal of GIS Day is to educate adults and students about the role geographic information systems play in the world around them.
