SCC to Host Native American Heritage Month Events in November

SCC NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH EVENT SCHEDULE:
All events will take place in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building unless otherwise noted.

“The Real Story of the First Thanksgiving” Luncheon and Presentation
11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7
Plaza Bistro, Student Center
Enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving (with recipes from Plymouth Rock) and learn the true story of the first Thanksgiving. Cost is $5 or five canned food items. All proceeds will benefit a local food pantry.

“Childhoods Lost: The Tragic Story of the Boarding School Era in Native American History”
10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27
Native American D.Z. Iron Wing will provide an insight into the era of boarding schools for Native American children and how it impacted his life. Additional presentations will be given by SCC faculty members from the psychology and sociology programs.

“Thunderheart” Film Showing
7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27
Filmed in South Dakota, “Thunderheart” is a fictional story that resembles the events surrounding the 1973 Sioux-FBI conflict, which ended up with fatalities on both sides. This contemporary western film brings to light the struggle for a better way of life for Native Americans living on the poorest reservation in the nation. This film is rated R.

Painted Sky Northstar Dance Company Workshop and Performance
Workshop: 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29
Performance: 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29
Painted Sky Northstar is a dance company that honors Native American culture by building awareness of traditional and contemporary musical expressions through performance and education. Painted Sky will lead a workshop and demonstrate Native American dances in a performance.
