The Mystical Arts of Tibet Set to Visit SCC March 28-31

The presentation is sponsored by SCC’s Multicultural Programming Committee and the Student Activities Office.

Throughout the week, the group will construct a Mandala Sand Painting, a tradition of Tantric Buddhism where millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform, in the student lounge of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building. Visitors are invited to watch the construction of the sand painting and learn how to use the tools.

The Mandala Opening Ceremony will be held from noon-1 p.m. Monday, March 28, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building, where the monks will consecrate the site of the Mandala Sand Painting.

A lecture, “The Life of a Tibetan Monk,” by the head lama of the Drepung Loseling Monastery, will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. He will discuss his personal experiences and the Tibetan monk culture and lifestyle.

Another lecture, “Meditation: A Tool for Conscious Living and Stress Relief,” will be held from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. A lama from the group of monks will share what is needed for a peaceful everyday life.

The Mandala Closing Ceremony will be held from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. A ceremony will be performed by the monks to dismantle the Mandala Sand Painting they created throughout the week. A portion of the sand will be distributed to the audience.
