Nate Phelps to Speak at SCC

Published: 10/05/2011

Phelps is well known as the estranged son of Pastor Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, known for its protest activities. Phelps, who also is an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) advocate, will tell his story of enduring physical, emotional and psychological abuse as a child.

The lecture by Phelps is part of SCC’s multicultural programming – events celebrating nationally recognized heritage months throughout the academic year. Phelps’ lecture specifically is part of Pride Month activities (being observed in October around National Coming Out Day while students are on campus – instead of June). Multicultural programming allows students to consider multiple perspectives and cultures.
