SCC Multicultural Programming Offers Mix of Education, Culture

Multicultural events are sponsored by SCC’s Multicultural Programming Committee, a group of SCC faculty and staff that coordinate events in an effort to broaden students’ perspectives and enhance their education. This year SCC will celebrate Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month and LGBT Pride Month.

SCC’s upcoming 2010-2011 multicultural events:

LGBT Pride Month (being observed in October around National Coming Out Day while students are on campus – instead of June)

• “Same-Sex Marriage: A Civil Debate” will be held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5. John Corvino and Glenn Stanton will debate the issue of same-sex marriage. For more information, http://www.kirklandproductions.com/ARTISTS/Same_Sex_Marriage_Debate-bio.html.

• God, Gays and Gaga: How the Midterm Elections are Signaling the Dawning of the New Culture War,” a lecture by LZ Granderson, writer for ESPN the Magazine and ESPN.com, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14. For more information, www.outmedia.org.

Hispanic Heritage Month – September/October

• Luis Rodriguez, author and poet, will lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 18. For more information, www.luisjrodriguez.com.

Native American Heritage Month – November

• Russell Means, activist and actor from "The Last of the Mohicans," will give a guest lecture titled "Contributions of American Indians to the Entire World" at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1. For more information, www.russellmeans.com.

Black History Month – February

• Shanelle Gabriel, singer and slam poet, will perform at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1. For more information, www.shanellegabriel.com.

Women’s History Month – March

• Jean Kilbourne, creator of the renowned “Killing Us Softly: Advertising’s Image of Women” film series and author of the award-winning book, “Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel” will lecture at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 1.
