SCC Philosophy Professor to Host Lecture Titled "Andy Warhol: The Embodiment of Danto's Theory of Art"

Published: 10/11/2010

The lecture will discuss Warhol’s art in terms of Arthur Danto’s philosophical theory that the way art is made has changed.

“Danto’s theory of art shows students a way to enhance their visual literacy and improve their ability to think critically,” Snyder said.

Snyder’s presentation will be accompanied by images and slides of contemporary pop art followed by a 10-15 minute response from Stephanie Ross. Ross is an expert in the philosophy of aesthetics and chair of the philosophy department at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The session will close with a 30-minute question and answer session.

Snyder has been noted as one of St. Louis’s foremost experts on philosophy of aesthetics. He recently returned from a three-year teaching experience in Istanbul, Turkey, and he will be giving special seminars on aesthetics at St. Louis University and Washington University next spring.

The SCC campus is located at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville.  The lecture, organized by the SCC philosophy department and Philosophy Club 729, is free and open to the public.
