SCC Receives $8,060 from DESE for GED Program

Published: 10/07/2009

The funding allows existing GED instructors extra time to serve as a registrar, performing registration activities outside of classroom time. Additionally, one part-time GED registrar was added.

“This results in uninterrupted instruction time in the classroom, which will improve student retention and performance,” said Diane Schroeder, associate dean of extended learning. “By managing the registration process outside the classroom, and controlling the number of students starting in a class at a time, instructors can teach progressively, which ultimately improves student success.”

DESE offered the funding to support program improvement in Missouri adult education and literacy programs. Schroeder said SCC’s pilot program during the 2008-09 academic year showed increased student retention, contact hours, average hours per student, and student performance, while enrollment decreased.

GED classes are offered at no charge through SCC’s Adult Education and Literacy Department, and provide classroom instruction for students preparing to take the GED Tests. The program extends to four counties (St. Charles, Warren, Lincoln, and Pike), and day and evening classes are available.
