  • Whenever Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers observe a student who is not complying with the tobacco-free campus policy, the DPS officer will give the student a reminder card.
    • The officer will ask for an ID from the student and report the incident to DPS Office.
    • DPS will record the reminder.
  • The second time a student is observed as not complying with the policy, the DPS officer will give the student a reminder card.
    • The officer will ask for an ID from the student and report the incident to DPS Office.
    • DPS will record the second reminder.
  • The third time a student is observed as not complying with the policy, the DPS officer will give the student a reminder card.

    • The DPS Office will mail a citation with a $5 fine to the student if this is the student's third reminder.
    • Transcripts will be withheld until the student has paid the fine.
  • When a student receives a third $5 fine, he or she will be required to meet with the vice president for academic and student affairs.
  • DPS will provide the vice president for academic and student affairs a list or printout of all violations that triggered the required meeting.
  • The vice president for academic and student affairs will meet with the student and will address the issue of repeated violations of the policy.  Possible actions may include, but are not limited to:
    • Provide information and resources that will help the student comply with the policy.
    • Encourage the student to attend a smoking cessation workshop.
    • Place the student on probation.
    • Place the student on suspension.
