Computer-Aided Drafting

Computer-Aided Drafting Program

These technicians (i.e. drafting technicians or "drafters") operate computer-aided design systems to produce final specifications and drawings for new designs. A drafter may work as a team member with engineers, analysts, architects, other drafters and/or designers assigned to a specific design. Drafters use special computer software for producing, communicating and revising detailed specifications and drawings.

Drafters

Drafters typically specialize in a design category, which includes architectural, industrial, mechanical, electrical and civil. Almost anything that is produced or manufactured originated with (computer-aided) designs and drafting. Examples of project designs that SCC CAD/Drafter graduates have performed as employed drafters are forensic crime laboratories, pharmaceuticals, aircraft, wind turbines, sports drink containers, factory layouts, canals and many others.

Job tasks may include understanding customer specifications, acquiring design parameters and subsequently using CAD programs to produce prototype or final designs. Design considerations oftentimes include cost, quality, appearance and functionality.

Drafters may (with experience) have inputs into the design concepts and details. In some cases, drafters can be promoted to supervisory or project management positions.

St. Charles Community College closely surveys and interacts with the employer community in selection of AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Revit as primary design software packages.
