Publishing Official Web Pages
To Edit an Existing Page Using Internet Explorer
STEP 1
The first step to editing an existing
Web page is to save the page you want to edit to disk.
- Start Internet Explorer
- Move to the page on the Web site that you wish to edit.
- Click on File in the menu at the top of the screen.
- Click on Save As in the file menu. You will
see the following screen:

- Change the location in the Save in: box to the A:
drive.
- Enter the name of the file in the File name: box. Make
sure you use the actual name of the file and not the file name that
Internet Explorer automatically fills in for you. The actual
name of the file can be found in the Address line
of the browser.
The address line contains the full path name of the file. For
example: http://www.stchas.edu/students/admissions/apply.shtml.
This path name will be important to know when you fill out the MAC
Work Request form.
The actual file name is located after the last slash in the Web address.
In this example: apply.shtml. It is important
that you keep the name of the file the same as the existing file. If
you change the name of the file it will be considered a new file and
could possible break links throughout the Web site that may have links
to that page.
- Click on Save. The entire file including any pictures
will be saved to disk.
STEP 2
Open the file in Dreamweaver and make the necessary changes
then save the file.
- Start Dreamweaver
- Click on File in the menu at the top of the screen.
- Click on Open in the file menu.
- Change the Look in: box to the A: drive.
- Click on the file that you saved earlier. In our example apply.shtml.
- Click on Open. The file will appear in Dreamweaver. Note:
the file may appear without its original formatting that you saw on
the screen. Do not worry about reformatting the page. A Web template
that contains all the necessary formatting instructions will be applied
to the file by the Web site coordinator.
- Make your changes to the file.
- Click on File in the menu at the top of the screen.
- Click on Save in the file menu.
STEP 3
Complete the Web section of a MAC
work request form (formerly known as the purple
form) and send the form and disk with the revised file to ADM 1121.
- Enter today’s date on the line provided.
- Enter Web page update as the Name of project or
event.
- Enter your name on the Person Placing Order line.
- Have your supervisor sign the form on the Signature line.
- Check the Web pages (Z) box on the front of the
form.
- Go to Section 4 on the back of the form (or page two if completing
the form online.)
- Indicate whether the file is an Internet/external (E) file or an
Intranet/internal file (I) by placing an I or an E on
the line. Place an E for Existing file on the line.

- Click on Save Page As in the file menu. You
will see the following screen:

- Change the location in the Save in: box to the A:
drive.
- Enter the name of the file in the File name: box. Notice
that the name of the file that Firefox supplies has an extra .htm added
to it. Keep the same file name but delete the .htm that
appears after the .shtml. The file name should look like apply.shtml.
It is important that you keep the name of the file the same
as the existing file. If you change the name of the file it will
be considered a new file and could possible break links throughout the
Web site that may have links to that page.
