The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) assessment is the most widely used personality assessment in the world. Based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types, the MBTI® is a self-report, computer-based questionnaire that measures an individual’s interests and preferences. Four basic scales, each with opposite poles, are examined: introversion/extroversion, sensate/intuitive, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving. The various combinations of theses preferences yield 16 different personality types. Types are typically denoted by four letters to represent the individual’s preference on each of the four scales. For example, INTJ would represent an individual whose scores reflect a preference for introversion, intuition, thinking, and judging. Each of the 16 different types is characterized by its own unique set of interests, values, and talents. Students will receive a personalized, written report detailing their test results and providing further analysis. Together, the student and SCC Career Counselor will use this information to explore vocational interests and career options that may compliment the student’s MBTI® type.

The most widely used career planning instrument in the world, the Strong Interest Inventory® is an in-depth assessment of an individual’s interests among a broad range of occupations, work, leisure activities, and educational subjects. This instrument is based on the idea that individuals are more satisfied and productive when they work in jobs or at tasks that they find interesting and when they work with people whose interests are similar to their own.As a self-report, computer-based questionnaire, the Strong® is a powerful tool for anyone choosing a college major, beginning a career, or considering a career change. Students will receive a personalized, written report that provides analysis of the results and identifies optimum career choices based on assessed interests. Together, the student and SCC Career Counselor will use this information to further explore vocational interests and career options.

SIGI PLUS® is a computer-based program developed by a team of researchers and specialists at Educational Testing Service.By using a system of nine separate but interrelated sections, students can identify and research careers. SIGI PLUS® helps clarify your values, interests and activities then searches the database of over 250 careers to develop personal career lists based on your wants and needs. You can register and/or access SIGI Plus® from any computer located on the St. Charles Community College campus via SIGI Plus® internet gateway.

The Self-Directed Search is an Interest Inventory developed by John Holland, Ph. D. His theory focuses on the compatibility of an individual’s personality type and their work environment. The higher the compatibility, the higher the chances are for career satisfaction. A student completes a series of questions based on their likes and dislike for activities and occupational titles, and their own self-estimates on certain activities. Your answers prompt a three-letter code called your Holland Code. SCC counselors will use this code to list and explore careers that are compatible with your interests. DISCOVER is a computer-based career guidance system developed by professionals at ACT Testing Services. DISCOVER will assist you by asking questions about your interests, abilities and personal values; it will then develop personal career lists based on those qualities. It offers a comprehensive look at occupations on your list including job descriptions, salary information and education needed. It can help you plan your education by finding schools that offer certain majors or finding majors by occupations. Lastly, it can help you plan for that job interview and help you prepare your resume. Once you complete your work on DISCOVER in the Career Center, you will be given a password which allows you to access the software using the Internet. You can then continue to use the program from your home at your convenience.

Missouri Occupational Card Sort is a deck of 90 cards, each listing an occupational title on one side with descriptive information about the title on the reverse side. It was developed as a means of assisting persons who are unclear about their present or future vocational choice.
