Assistant Director Job Description

Summary
Coordinates with the director to enhance the quality of the program by sharing responsiblity for staff supervison, programming, staff development, and maintenance of all licensing and accreditation requirements.  Acts as lead teacher by providing instruction and care for children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manages the Child Development Center in director's absence.
  • Performs lead teacher duties.  Assists in the planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate activities that advance all areas of children's development and learning including social, emotional, intellectual, and physical competency; assists in conducting the program in accordance with the Center's goals and principles, including interaction with children; lesson plans, schedules, snacks and meals, and parent interaction. 
  • Helps coordinate the daily operation of the Child Development Center to meet all health, safety, licensing, and accreditation standards.
  • Supervises and provides staff development opportunities for teachers.
  • Coordinates observations and student practicum activities throughout the Center.
  • Supervises the execution of appropriate curriculum for all age groups.
  • Recommends purchases of instructional materials and teaching aids such as books, toys, and games designed to stimulate learning.
  • Assists director in interviews and recommendations of hiring teaching and service staff.
  • Confers with parents regarding facility activities, policies, and enrollment procedures.
  • Confers with teaching staff regarding child's behavioral or learning problems, and recommends methods of modifying inappropriate behavior and encouraging learning experiences.
  • Arranges medical attention for ill or injured child in accordance with parental instructions.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the director.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Assists in the supervision of approximately 25 employees in the Child Development Center.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include assisting in interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Associate's degree (A. A.) in Early Childhood Education or a related field, and at least five years experience as a classroom teacher required.  Bachelor's degree preferred. One or more years supervisory experience preferred.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must pass physical and child abuse and neglect screening.  Must be at least 18 years of age.
