Ability To Benefit

Students who have not earned either a high school diploma, a GED certificate, or students who are Home-Schooled (please refer to the Home Schooled section for more information) may be admitted with an Ability to Benefit status.

It is the college's recommendation that a student receive a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED) before beginning college work.

Students who want to enroll with this status are required to complete an academic skills assessment to determine their ability to benefit from course work offered. The test will assess your ability in reading, writing, computational, and algebra skills.

When the Academic Skills Assessment, is completed, the test results will be reviewed with the student by an academic advisor. Appropriate course work will be recommended based on the test results.

If the student has demonstrated the ability to benefit from college level course work, the Student Development Office will submit a written recommendation to the Director of Admissions and Registrar. The recommendation will include any suggested limitation in the number of credit hours and any suggested remedial course work.

If it is determined that the student is not able to benefit from college level course work, or if remedial course work is recommended exclusively, the student will be referred to the Adult Basic Education/GED preparation program.

All students referred to the GED preparation program are expected to complete the GED in a reasonable amount of time. Please present the GED certificate to the Registrar's Office for verification of completion and to ensure your academic file is updated.
