Office of Accessibility Services

PERSONAL ATTENDANTS

Personal care attendants may be necessary to permit participation in programs/courses. SCC is not responsible for locating or coordinating financial arrangements for personal attendants. The College recognizes that in some instances, personal attendants are necessary in the classroom (per documentation). Students must be aware that the personal attendants are not considered "students". Their sole purpose is to be a care giver/service provider to the student. Students utilizing an attendant must work closely with the OAS Coordinator. Attendants' participation in class is limited to assisting the student's accessibility. If the student requires out-of-class testing, the student needs to follow the procedure for scheduling tests with the OAS Office. An attendant can be present (if documentation supports this request) during a test but the OAS proctor must administer the exam.

While on campus, students needing assistance in getting to various buildings, toileting, dispensing of medications, etc., should have a personal attendant. Requesting such services from non-trained individuals on campus could pose a threat to those providing assistance and the individual with the disability. The College cannot assume the liability risk.

TIMELY NOTIFICATION TO THE OAS OFFICE IS REQUESTED IF AN ATTENDANT WILL NEED TO ACCOMPANY A STUDENT IN CLASS. PRIOR NOTIFICATION WILL ENABLE THE OAS OFFICE TO COMPLETE FACULTY NOTIFICATION FORMS AND FORWARD THEM TO INSTRUCTORS.

ABSENTEEISM

Class attendance policy is determined either by the College, department/division or individual faculty member. The OAS Office has no role in determining appropriate course attendance. With appropriate documentation, the student may request the OAS Office to complete an Attendance Issue Letter indicating that the student's disability may result in occasional absences. The faculty will determine if absences have become excessive and may recommend that the student withdraw from the class.Attendance flexibility is solely a faculty/Academic Affairs decision.

 MISUSE OR ABUSE OF ACCOMMODATIONS

It is important for students to understand that if they misuse or abuse accommodations, the College will have to address this issue. An alternate accommodation may be substituted if a student cannot act responsibly.

SUPPORT ANIMALS

OAS serves as the office handling approval of bringing support animals on campus. Support animals are allowed on campus to assist students with disabilities. The student is responsible for ensuring that the animal is not disruptive to the class or pose any risk to others while on campus. The student should provide a letter from his/her physician explaining why the support animal needs to accompany the student on campus. It is recommended that the animal have identification regarding support status. A letter from the animal's veterinarian should be on file with the Office of Accessibility Services (updated annually) regarding health, safety issues, and vaccinations.

A support animal may be excluded from the campus when the animal's behavior poses a direct threat to the health and safety of others or is disruptive to the academic environment. The student is responsible for cleaning up after the animal, any property damage, sanitary disposal of animal wastes, and appropriate care and control of the animal.

PARKING

Accessible parking is handled through the Department of Public Safety. Students may contact that department at (636) 922-8545. Accessible parking is available on each parking lot.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

The Department of Public Safety is responsible for emergency responses, medical alerts and evacuations, etc.  Students anticipating that they will need assistance can contact the Department of Public Safety at 636-922-8545.

ASSESSMENT ACCOMMODATIONS

Students who think that their disability will preclude them from taking the assessment under standard conditions should contact the OAS Coordinator. The OAS Office may administer the assessment with supporting disability documentation. Students need to request the individual assessment prior to taking the test in the Assessment Center. The test will be scheduled depending upon OAS Assistants' work schedules.

INTERNSHIPS

Students and faculty should plan ahead for any internships where accommodations may be needed. OAS is available to assist in determining the College's responsibility regarding internship accommodations on a job site.
