FAHIM MASOUD AWARDED ANNUAL
SCC FACULTY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

The St. Charles Community College Faculty Association has chosen a recipient for the group’s 2009 scholarship.  International student Fahim Masoud was selected for the award, which can be applied at any academic institution.
 
The Faculty Association awards the $1,000 scholarship on an annual basis.  Members of the Scholarship Committee choose a winning candidate based on academics and recommendations from professors.
 
“The faculty at SCC give this scholarship because we want to support our students,” said Paul Roesler, professor of political science and scholarship committee member.  “This a way to show how much we care about our students and want them to succeed.”
 
Masoud will use the scholarship in his last semester at SCC. Before coming to SCC, he was an interpreter in Afghanistan.  The military officer who was his boss sponsored him to come to the United States on a student visa to attend college. Because Masoud would be staying with the officer’s family in Troy, Mo., SCC was a natural choice.
 
Upon completion of his SCC coursework, Masoud plans to transfer to Washington University in St. Louis and major in political science and international relations.  After earning his bachelor’s degree, he hopes to become a politician and serve as a U.S. leader in the Middle East.
 
Will Griffin, associate professor of anthropology at SCC, had Masoud as a student in his cultural anthropology class.  
 
“I was always very impressed by Fahim and his goals,” Griffin said.  “He really wants to change the world, and is focused on getting the tools he needs to bring peace to Afghanistan and also help the United States.”
 
Masoud said the Faculty Association Scholarship will make a huge difference in his last semester at SCC, as it will cover a large portion of his tuition.
 
“Education is the most important thing in my life, and this scholarship makes my dreams come true,” Masoud said.
