WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN 17TH ANNUAL
COMMUNITY COLLEGE RUN EVENTS

Yates and Bergfeld Are Men’s and Women’s Overall Winners in the 10K Race;
Hollenbeck Middle School and Dardenne Elementary School
Win Highest Participation Trophies in 1-Mile Fun Run

Warm temperatures, a warm spring breeze, and bright skies contributed to the fun of almost 500 participants who mastered the 10K Race, 1-Mile Fun Run, and 3-Mile Walk held on April 25 at St. Charles Community College.  The run/walk events were part of the college’s 17th annual Spring Wellness Festival that drew more than 1,000 area residents for a morning of health, fitness, and family recreation.

“We are pleased to offer such a fun, fitness-oriented event to the community each year,” said Heather McDorman, race
co-coordinator and vice president for marketing and communications at the college.  “It’s great to see community members of all ages and ability levels participate in the run/walk events, as well as have the opportunity to visit booths from a variety of local vendors.”

In the 10K Race, Stephen Yates, 38, of Florissant, was first to cross the finish line.  He came in with a time of 35 minutes, 54 seconds, followed by Dan Miner, 24, of St. Peters, at 37:05, and Patrick Hayden, 32, of Ballwin, at 37:31. Julie Bergfeld, 42, of Maplewood, was the first woman to cross the finish line, coming in sixth overall with a time of 41:35. Yates and Bergfeld, the male and female overall winners, each received a $100 cash prize.

In the top SCC student, alumni, and employee categories, the first male SCC student to cross the finish line was Alex Ohl (44:43) and the first female student to finish was Christine Clevenger (53:59).  The first male alum to cross the finish line was Brian Schoenholz (40:37), and the first female alum was Amanda Gallatin (47:47).  In the employee division, Mike Kralik (37:59), theatre technical assistant, was the first male to cross the finish line.  The first female employee to finish was Jennifer Bishop, math, science, and health continuing education instructor (1:03:32).

More than 85 trophies and plaques were awarded in age group categories in both the 10K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run events. The 3-mile walk was non-competitive. About 180 runners finished the 10K race; the Fun Run, 221; and the 3-mile walk, about 78.  A total of 498 runners and walkers registered for the event.

In the 1-Mile Fun Run, runners of all ages lined up to test their skills on the course that tours the SCC campus. Of the 221 runners, 186 were students in kindergarten through grade 8, and represented 33 area schools.

In this year’s annual Highest Participation Challenge, the competition was divided between Grades K-5 and Grades 6-8, with the Fun Runs for the two age groups beginning at staggered times.

In the Grades 6-8 Challenge, Hollenbeck Middle School in the Francis Howell School District took home the Highest Participation Traveling Trophy with 62 participants.  This is the ninth consecutive year Hollenbeck students have won the competition. In the Grades K-5 Challenge, Dardenne Elementary School in the Fort Zumwalt School District took home the trophy with 39 participants in its fourth consecutive win.  Hollenbeck and Dardenne were each awarded a $100 gift card to go toward fitness/wellness supplies for the school.

The races and the 3-mile walk were featured events in the college’s annual Spring Wellness Festival, which also included more than 40 exhibit booths with health and wellness information presented by hospitals, agencies, fitness organizations, businesses, and institutions in the area.

Presenting sponsors for the event were Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, the Suburban Journals/St. Charles County Journals, Family Chiropractic Rehabilitation, and the Wal-Mart Foundation. Other sponsors included AB Chiropractic and Family Wellness, Folsom Distributing, Green Lantern Car Wash, Hanneke Logo Wear, Missouri American Water Company, Mostly Bicycles, Mulligan Printing, Playtime Party Center, Radiant Research, and RespondRight.
