NEW SSM ST. JOSEPH FRIENDS SCHOLARSHIP TO BENEFIT
NURSING STUDENTS

The Friends of SSM St. Joseph Auxiliary recently established a new nursing scholarship for students in the second year of the associate’s degree nursing program at St. Charles Community College (SCC).  The scholarship will award $1,000 for the fall semester, funded by the Friends of SSM St. Joseph Auxiliary, and the SCC Foundation will match this amount for the following spring semester, as long as the student maintains the required grade point average. 

Up to three scholarships will be awarded each fall.  Nursing students who will be entering their second year in the fall may apply for this scholarship.  The application deadline is June 1, 2008.

“This scholarship could not have come at a better time,” according to Pat Porterfield, dean of math, science and health, “because of the rising costs both for education and for living expenses.  Many of our students have families, and finding the resources to attend college is challenging.”  Health care administrators in hospitals, rehab facilities, and long-term care facilities recognize that SCC nursing graduates are well qualified, and SCC nursing graduates are always in demand, Porterfield said.  “This new scholarship will not only benefit our students; it will also benefit health care providers throughout our region looking for skilled and dedicated nurses.”

“We are grateful to the Friends of SSM St. Joseph Auxiliary for establishing this scholarship, and we know that the students who receive them will be very thankful as well,” said Edie Kirk, executive director of the SCC Foundation. Recently, the SCC Foundation, in conjunction with contributing businesses and community civic organizations, awarded $65,500 to students enrolled in various career and transfer programs for the spring 2008 semester.
