COMMUNITY COLLEGE RUN EVENTS

Hollenbeck Middle School and Dardenne Elementary School
Win Highest Participation Trophies in 1-Mile Fun Run
Moderate temperatures, a brisk spring breeze, and bright skies contributed to the fun of more than 500 participants who mastered the 10K Race, 1-Mile Fun Run, and 3-Mile Walk held on April 26 at St. Charles Community College. The run/walk events were part of the college’s 16th annual Spring Wellness Festival that drew more than 1,000 area residents for a morning of health, fitness, and family recreation.
“We are pleased to offer such a fun, fitness-oriented event to the community each year,” said Heather McDorman, race co-coordinator and vice president for marketing and communications at the college. “It’s great to see community members of all ages and ability levels participate in the run/walk events, as well as have the opportunity to visit booths from a variety of local vendors.”
In the 10K Race, Brian Whitehead, 26, of St. Louis, was first to cross the finish line. He came in with a time of 33 minutes, 29 seconds, followed by Jason Olszowka, 28, of Greenville, Ill., at 33:46, and Stephen Yates, 39, of Florissant, at 34:24. Julie Bergfeld, 41, of Maplewood, was the first woman to cross the finish line, coming in eighth overall with a time of 40:33. Whitehead and Bergfeld, the male and female overall winners, each received a $100 cash prize. In the top SCC student and employee categories, the first male SCC student to cross the finish line was John Pollihan (39:10) and the first female student to finish was Amanda Gallatin (46:39). In the employee division, JayCee Jackson (43:37), groundskeeper, was the first male to cross the finish line. The first female employee to finish was adjunct faculty member Kristina Johannes (56:06).
More than 85 trophies and plaques were awarded in age group categories in both the 10K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run events. The 3-mile walk was non-competitive. About 159 runners finished the 10K race; the Fun Run, 317; and the 3-mile walk, about 62.
A total of 550 runners and walkers registered for the event, almost 100 more than last year. Higher numbers were thanks in large part to a significant increase in the number of students in Kindergarten through grade 8 who participated in the 1-Mile Fun Run.
In the 1-Mile Fun Run, runners of all ages lined up to test their skills on the course that tours the SCC campus. Of the 317 runners, 290 were students in kindergarten through grade 8.
In this year’s annual Highest Participation Challenge among 35 area schools, the competition was divided between Grades K-5 and Grades 6-8, with the Fun Runs for the two age groups beginning at staggered times.
In the Grades 6-8 Challenge, Hollenbeck Middle School in the Francis Howell School District took home the Highest Participation Traveling Trophy with 115 participants. This is the eighth consecutive year Hollenbeck students have won the competition. In the Grades K-5 Challenge, Dardenne Elementary School in the Fort Zumwalt School District took home the trophy with 38 participants in its second consecutive win. Hollenbeck and Dardenne were each awarded a $100 gift card to go toward fitness/wellness supplies for the school.
The races and the 3-mile walk were featured events in the college’s annual Spring Wellness Festival, which also included more than 30 exhibit booths with health and wellness information presented by hospitals, agencies, fitness organizations, businesses, and institutions in the area.
Presenting sponsors for the event were Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, The Suburban Journals/St. Charles County Journals, and the Wal-Mart Foundation. Other sponsors included AB Chiropractic and Family Wellness, ADIO Family Chiropractic, Al Wansing Insurance Agency, Best Vending, Community News, Hanneke Logo Wear, Health Source Chiropractic and Progressive Rehab, Jelly Belly Candy Company, KFAV 99.9 FM “Hot Country” Radio, Missouri-American Water Co., and Mostly Bicycles.
