FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FREE WORKSHOP TO HELP NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS PREPARE FOR COLLEGE

“Give it the old college try!”

That’s easier said than done for many “non-traditional,” older college students.

St. Charles Community College understands that and is helping current and future returning learners combat their fears and overcome their unique challenges by presenting a free Returning Learners Workshop.

“For many reasons, people often think about returning to school, but take no action. They may have started a career and/or a family, or maybe they have dropped out of college many years ago. They are often not sure of where to begin. They wonder what would be expected of them and they question their ability to study and learn,” said Andrea Crouch, academic counselor.

SCC will host the next three-day Returning Learners Workshop from 8:45 a.m.-1 p.m.
Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 5-7, in the college’s Student Center.

“The Returning Learners Workshop helps people make the decision to return to school and pursue their dreams,” Crouch said.

The workshop will address confidence building, positive attitudes, study and concentration skills, test taking skills, instructor expectations, career options, goal setting, decision-making, time and stress management. Participants will also learn about SCC’s programs, courses, financial assistance, and student services.

On day one of the workshop, participants will spend time becoming acquainted with one another over a light breakfast and will listen to three different speakers present information on building confidence, finding a support system, preparing to be successful in school, and developing a positive attitude. Participants will become familiar with SCC through campus tours and find out how to join the Returning Learners Club.

On the second day of the workshop career and financial aid counselors will discuss the logistics and goals of starting back to school as adults, parents, and professionals. Participants will learn about the various ways to pay for college, such as financial aid and scholarships.  A career counselor will present a career exploration activity designed to determine an ideal career and will also discuss career opportunities with potential students.

On the final day, participants will learn about using the career center, getting involved beyond the classroom, and about resources for developing study and test taking skills.  A faculty member will talk to participants about what is expected from students. A panel of returning learners will then discuss the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. The workshop will conclude with a light lunch and a question and answer period.

Because each session builds upon the previous one, attendance at each day of the workshop is recommended. Those attending all three days would have College 101 (Orientation to College) waived by SCC.

For more information or to enroll in the workshop, call 636-922-8241 or contact Andrea Crouch
at 636-922-8248.
