SCC TO HOST SEMINAR, “THE EFFECTS OF DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE
ON CHILDREN,” ON MAY 23
The Healthy Communities St. Charles County Family
Violence Council is sponsoring a seminar entitled “The Effects
of Domestic Violence on Children,” from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday,
May 23, in the Student Center on the St. Charles Community College campus.
Registration for the event is $10. The
seminar will include exhibits, a continental breakfast, a keynote speaker,
three breakout sessions, a closing panel, and attendance prizes. There
will also be limited Law Enforcement scholarships available for officers
working in the St. Charles County area.
Chuck Alphin, Jr., the executive director of
the Building Life Foundation Nonviolent Center, will be the keynote speaker. Alphin
will provide an overview of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s philosophy
and methodology in concept. His speech will focus on heightening
the awareness of the Kingian approach to conflict and domestic violence
management.
The breakout sessions will include:
- Karen Sieve, M.P.P.A., of Bridgeway Counseling Services
Sieve will explore the factors that place children and youth at risk of use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. - Alison Brown, M.E.D., L.P.C., and Pat Kulik, of Bridgeway
Counseling Services
Brown and Kulik will cover the continuing issues for children who have witnessed domestic violence when their parents choose to end their relationship. - Jason Dodson, Esq., of Legal Services of Missouri
Dodson will discuss the general process of seeking and receiving an order of protection and how it affects custody and children’s safety. - Rachel Eckhardt and Emily Kreft, of St. Louis Crisis Nursery
Eckhardt and Kreft’s session will cover working with parents regarding goal setting and how to work through an initial crisis to reach a point of safety and stability. - Linda Spina, R.N., W.H.N.P., of Nurses for Newborns
Spina’s session will discuss the effects of domestic violence on newborns. - Officer Patty Bratcher, of the O’Fallon
Police Department
Bratcher will discuss the behavioral, social, and emotional problems of children who witness domestic violence.
The
seminar is designed for clergy and youth counselors, law enforcement
officials, community leaders, victim service agencies, school counselors
and nurses, children and family services, and anyone else interested
in learning more about the topic.
