Anderson’s speech “The Mind of the Soldier” to focus on volunteer soldiers of the Civil War

Michigan State Historian Bill Anderson will deliver the keynote address at St. Charles Community College’s History Theatre Festival at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building on the SCC campus.  Anderson’s speech, entitled “The Mind of the Soldier,” will focus on the volunteer soldier of the Civil War.

In his presentation, Anderson will discuss the soldier’s motivation to serve, their correspondence, relationships with women and the enemy, their attitudes about the great issues of the war, and the ultimate sacrifice so many made.

Anderson has read more than 25,000 letter and personal diaries from the time period, writing two books from the perspective of the soldier, “They Died to Make Men Free: History of the 19th Michigan Infantry,” and “We Are Sherman’s Men: The Civil War Letters of Henry Orendorff.”

After a 33-year career in higher education, Michigan Gov. John Engler appointed Anderson as the founding director of the Michigan Department of History, Arts, and Libraries, in August 2001.  Anderson also serves as a strategic planning consultant for industry, local units of government, economic development organizations, and schools.
