Press Release
MEDIA ADVISORY ON SCC GRADUATES
Stephanie, 28, will graduate with an associate of arts degree in May and will pursue the ultrasound tech program at Forest Park Community College. She hopes to work with heart patients because she is fascinated with how the heart works. She was named Outstanding Tutor at SCC this year for her work in helping students in the science lab. She is a single parent with a 4-year-old son who has overcome a number of trials to succeed as a student.
Leslie, 36, of St. Charles, is a returning learner, a widow with two children, and is an officer of three student clubs, including vice president of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She received this year's Missouri Community College Student Leadership award and is this year's nominee from SCC to the All-Missouri Academic Team. She is attending SCC to pursue a new career in social work, having already earned a nursing degree from St. Louis University on a soccer scholarship.
Tina, 46, of St. Peters, will graduate this spring with an associate’s degree in Health Information Technology. After she started at SCC in fall 2005, her pre-teen son fell ill, and it soon became apparent he would need a kidney transplant. He had lost his first kidney due to childhood cancer. Tina was an advocate for her son, navigating the twists and turns of the healthcare system. The knowledge she gained in the HIT program helped her understand the disease and treatments and convinced the medical establishment that he would be a good transplant candidate. Her husband donated his kidney to his son last summer, and the young man has thrived. SCC faculty were able to schedule her clinical practicums around her son’s need to have weekly testing, and with the help of her fellow students, she will be graduating in May.
Andrea, 26, of O’Fallon, has taken every math class offered at the college. She is married to Andrew, SCC math instructor, and hopes to become a doctor. She will graduate with an associate of arts degree and is very bright and personable.
Rowena, 28, of O’Fallon, is an extremely bright, articulate student who will graduate with an associate’s degree in nursing. She is from the Philippines, has only been in the U.S. for about four years, and recently became a U.S. citizen.
Rochelle, 54, of St. Peters, was laid off from TWA as a flight attendant in 2002. She will graduate with an associate of arts degree.
