POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR NAMED “MR. SCC”
Inaugural fundraiser benefits community
college’s Student Senate
It may have been his heartwarming talent demonstration featuring an origami
crane. Or his real tuxedo in the formal wear competition.
Or maybe it was his witty repartee during the interview portion: “I
love teaching students so much I would work at SCC for free. And, as my
wife has said, I practically do.”
In the end, five judges crowned Ron Pettus, associate professor of political
science, as Mr. SCC (Mr. St. Charles Community College) in the inaugural
competition and fundraiser to benefit SCC’s Student Senate.
Pettus competed against seven other male SCC staff and employees in formal
and athletic wear, talent demonstration, and interview portions. Should
Pettus be unable to fulfill his duties as Mr. SCC, Vincent Novicki, marketing
specialist and first runner up, will assume the title.
The SCC Student Senate raised $435 from the event, which will be used to
fund projects for the coming academic year. “The staff and faculty
were really good sports, and we had a lot of fun putting this on,” said
Kendra Kaine, Student Senate 2006-2007 president. Kaine choreographed an
opening dance for the contestants to “Stayin’ Alive;” the
crowd demanded an encore at the end of the competition. “Yep, it’s
not often you get to see grown men group dancing to the BeeGees,” Kaine
said.
Pettus was awarded $150 for the Mr. SCC title, which he donated back to
the Senate. “I’m sure I’ll be getting plenty of endorsement
opportunities from this, so I’m not worried about the prize money,” Pettus
joked.
