Moderate temperatures, a gentle breeze, and bright
skies contributed to the fun of more than 450 participants who mastered
the 10K Race, 1-Mile Fun Run, and 3-Mile Walk held on April 28 at St.
Charles Community College. The run/walk events were part of the
college’s 15th annual Spring Wellness Festival that drew more than
1,000 area residents for a morning of health, fitness, and family recreation.
“We are pleased to offer this opportunity to our community each year to experience an enjoyable and educational festival,” said Winnie Stufflebam, event coordinator and vice president for institutional advancement at the college. “In addition to the run/walk events, dozens of exhibitors provided information and health screenings of interest to our participants.”
In the 10K Race, it was a tale of first-time winners. Matt Helbig, 27, of St. Louis, was first to cross the finish line. He came in with a time of 33 minutes, 23 seconds, followed by Jason Olszowka, 27, of Greenville, Ill., at 35:07, and Chris Roberdeau, 31, of St. Charles, at 36:12. Carol Wright, 47, of Wildwood, was the first woman to cross the finish line, coming in seventh overall with a time of 42:13. Helbig and Wright, the male and female overall winners, each received a $100 cash prize. In the top SCC student and employee categories, the first male SCC student to cross the finish line was Nathan Bloor (52:40) and the first female student to finish was Sarah Verville (42:32). In the employee division, Jennifer Bishop (56:28), continuing education instructor, came in first. there were no male employees entered.
More than 85 trophies and plaques were awarded in age group categories in both the 10K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run events. The 3-mile walk was non-competitive. About 164 runners finished the 10K race; the Fun Run, 217; and the 3-mile walk, about 82.
A total of 463 runners and walkers registered for the event, including about 60 who signed up on race day.
In the 1-Mile Fun Run, runners of all ages lined up to test their skills on the course that tours the SCC campus. Of the 217 runners, 190 were students in Kindergarten through Grade 8.
In this year’s annual Highest Participation Challenge among 34 area schools, the competition was divided between Grades K-5 and Grades 6-8, with the Fun Runs for the two age groups beginning at staggered times.
In the Grades 6-8 Challenge, Hollenbeck Middle School in the Francis Howell School District took home the Highest Participation Traveling Trophy with 80 participants. This is the seventh consecutive year Hollenbeck students have won the competition. In the Grades K-5 Challenge, Dardenne Elementary School in the Fort Zumwalt School District took home the trophy with 23 participants in its second consecutive win.
The races and the 3-mile walk were featured events in the college’s annual Spring Wellness Festival, which also included more than 40 exhibit booths with health and wellness information presented by hospitals, agencies, fitness organizations, businesses, and institutions in the area. There were health screenings, fitness products and equipment, and sports and recreation ideas, and the festival area was packed with visitors all morning, Stufflebam said.
Presenting sponsors for the event were Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, The Suburban Journals/St. Charles County Journals, and UPS. Other sponsors included Best Vending, Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, Inc., Hanneke Logo Wear, Jelly Belly Candy Company, KFAV 99.9 FM Radio, Missouri-American Water Co., Moore Company Homes and Tradition Builders, St. Charles Sports and Physical Therapy Inc., Sciortino Chiropractic, and Take Care Health Systems.
