COUGARS ARE 7-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
SCC Defeats Broward Community College
in Saturday’s NCRHA Title Match

In a decisive 8-2 victory over Broward (Fla.) Community College on Saturday, St. Charles Community College captured its seventh National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) championship title before their home crowd in St. Peters.
    
After an early holding penalty charged to defenseman Ryan Maxwell, SCC fell behind in the game 1-0. But the Cougars snapped back with two goals from forwards Matt Johnson and Gus Maloney. Maxwell gained redemption following his penalty, scoring SCC’s third goal with less than 30 seconds to play in the opening period.
    
SCC never looked back.
    
The Cougars’ Gus Maloney (1), Mike Herbert (2), and Blake Propp (1) scored four unanswered goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead in the second period.
    
“We didn’t want to jinx ourselves by saying it, but by the time Herbert netted his second goal (with 1:30 remaining) in the second period, we were feeling pretty good about the outcome of the game,” said Cougars Coach Justin Goad.
    
Propp, who was later named the game’s MVP, scored his second goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining in the third period. Propp and Maloney finished the game tied with two goals and two assists apiece.
    
Sophomore goalie Kevin Hesemann finished his fifth complete game of the tournament allowing just two goals on 22 shots. He ended the tournament with an impressive .927 save percentage.
    
SCC went 4-1-0 en route to the championship, with wins over Macomb (Mich.) Community College (4-1), Nassau (N.Y.) Community College (5-1), and Suffolk County (N.Y.) Community College (5-2). The Cougars faced Broward earlier in the week and lost 5-4.
    
The SCC Division B team was eliminated in a 6-1 loss to the Michigan State Spartans in the quarterfinals round of the tournament. The Cougars “B” team finished the national tournament with a 2-2 record with wins over Texas A&M and University of California–Santa Barbara.
