COUGAR HOCKEY TEAMS TO BATTLE FOR NATIONAL TITLES
APRIL 4-7 IN ST. PETERS

It’s official – the Gateway to the West will be “College Hockey Central” Easter weekend, April 4-7. The National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) recently announced this year’s championship tournament will take place at Matteson Square Gardens Tri-Plex in St. Peters, home of the St. Charles Community College Cougars Roller Hockey Club.

The event will bring 60 teams in four divisions together to compete for the title of National Champion, including both SCC club teams.

This year’s Collegiate Roller Hockey Championships will coincide with the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Men’s Frozen Four hockey event, which will be held the same weekend at the Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis. The NCAA will hold men’s ice hockey national semi-finals on April 5, with the national championship game played on April 7.

The Cougars six-time national championship Division-III team finished the regular season 16-2-0 and in first place in the country. SCC finished four points ahead of second-place Broward (Fla.) Community College (12-4-4) and 12 points ahead of local rival St. Louis Community College-Meramec (10-8-0). Riverside (Ca.) Community College, the 2006 D-III champions, finished the season 10-7-1.

SCC will look for production on offense from sophomores Blake Propp, Gus Maloney, and Andy Meade. Propp and Maloney finished the season tied for seventh overall in the nation in goals scored with 28. Sophomore defenseman Andy Meade aided the cause with 21 assists, fourth most among D-III teams.

The Cougars “B” team finished the regular season 15-3-0 and in third place locally, behind Lindenwood University (17-1-0) and St. Louis Community College-Meramec (15-2-1). On the national scene, the Cougars record was good enough for fourth place.

“We have met one of our goals – to earn spots for both teams at the championship tournament in April. The players now know their next goal: to claim two national titles at their home rink in St. Peters,” said Cougars Coach Justin Goad.

Other D-III teams invited to compete in this year’s tournament include Broward County Community College, Macomb (Mich.) Community College, Riverside Community College, St. Louis Community College-Meramec, Suffolk County (N.Y.) Community College, Nassau (N.Y.) County Community College, and Arapahoe (Colo.) Community College.

SCC’s “B” team will compete against Colorado State University, Lindenwood University, Michigan State University, St. Louis Community College-Meramec, Suffolk County Community College, Texas A&M, Towson University, University of California-Santa Barbara, University of Florida, University of Michigan, and University of North Texas.

The NCRHA National Championships Web site will be the official source for national championships news, scores, schedules, merchandise, sponsor information, and access to live Internet radio broadcasts of most games.
