Reporting Suspected Child Abuse

P – 540.9

College instructors, administrators, and other employees with responsibility for direct interaction with a child, are considered to be mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse. This means that they have a legal and ethical duty to report child abuse to state authorities. (A child is defined as any person under 18 years of age.)

Pr – 540.9.1 If an instructor, administrator, or other employee who is a mandatory reporter has reasonable cause to suspect that a child has been or may be subjected to abuse, that person must immediately notify the Child Abuse & Neglect Hotline at 1-800-392-3738.
Pr – 540.9.2 Following a report of abuse, employees have a duty to cooperate with investigators from the Division of Family Services and law enforcement authorities.
D – 540.9.1 Child abuse is defined as any physical injury, sexual abuse, or emotional abuse inflicted on a child other than by accidental means by those responsible for the child’s care, custody, or control.
