Frequently Asked Questions of the
|
| 1. What does an OTA do? An OTA provides services to people whose functional performance has been affected by physical injury or illness, developmental delays or deficits, the aging process, and/or psychological problems. With the help of a larger health care team, the OTA helps patients regain lost capacities, adapt to their disabilities, and learn or relearn motor skills and reasoning skills. The OTA's ultimate goal is to help patients reach the highest level of independent living and develop a balanced lifestyle of work and leisure. 2. What is the difference between an OTA and an OT? OTA's work under the supervision of a professional occupational therapist. The OT plans the treatment program, while the OTA helps implement it. OT's must complete an advanced degree at an accredited four year school. 3. Where do OTA's work and how much do they make? OTA's work in a variety of settings including: schools, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, community-based agencies, and home health care. Graduates of the OTA program from the 2002-03 school year had an average salary of $19.75 per hour. 4. What abilities and skills do I need to be an OTA? OTA's have a very physically demanding job that requires stooping, bending, lifting, coordination, and flexibility. Successful OTA's also must have good interpersonal skills, be able to work with a wide variety of people, be organized and self-directed, and be team players. 5. What is the job outlook for OTA's? Employment of OTA's is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2008. Growth will result from an aging population and advances in medicine that will allow more people with critical problems to survive and require rehabilitative services. 6. How long is the OTA program and when can I get started? The OTA classes start once a year in the Fall and it takes two years to complete the program. Many students begin taking their general education before starting the actual OTA program. 7. How do I get my OTA license? Graduates of the OTA program will be able to sit for the national certification exam. Upon successful completion, you will be a Certified Occupational Assistant. Most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the exam. The Missouri Boards of Occupational Therapy may refuse licensure to applicants who may jeopardize the well being of patients. 8. What is the fieldwork experience? All OTA students must complete Level II fieldwork within 18 months of completing their academic training. This is different from the Practicum students will perform as part of their training. |
