Students who have not earned either a high school diploma, a GED certificate, or students who are Home-Schooled (please refer to the Home Schooled section for more information) may be admitted with an Ability to Benefit status.

Can I attend college at SCC if I don't have a high school diploma or GED?

It is in the student's best interest to receive either a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED) before beginning college work.

Students who want to enroll at St. Charles Community College who have not received a high school diploma or a GED are required to complete an academic skills assessment to determine their ability to benefit from coursework offered at the college. The test will assess your ability in reading, writing, and computational and algebra skills.

When you complete the Academic Skills Assessment, your test results will be reviewed and you will be counseled as to the appropriateness of coursework offered by the college. If it is determined that you are not able to benefit from college-level course work, or if remedial course work is recommended exclusively, you will be referred to the Adult Basic Education/GED preparation program.

All students referred to the GED preparation program are expected to complete the GED in a reasonable amount of time. You should present the GED certificate to the registrar for verification of completion, and it will be noted in your file.

If you have demonstrated the ability to benefit from college-level course-work, the Student Development Office will make written recommendation to the director of admissions and registrar. This written recommendation will include any suggested limitation in the number of credit hours in which you should enroll and suggested remedial coursework.
