The college will be closed Friday, April 22, for the spring holiday. Classes will resume and offices will reopen on Monday, April 25.

$6,000 has already been raised in sponsorships for John McGuire’s Farewell Tribute, set for Thursday, Aug. 18. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the College Center. More details can be found at www.stchas.edu/mcguirefarewell.

The SCC 25th Anniversary Kick-Off Week has officially begun! All events are free and will continue through Friday, April 8, including:

  • Monday, April 4: "Party Like It's 1986" campus-wide kick-off party with free cake, punch, games and live '80s music by Johny James from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Campus Plaza (rain location Student Center).
  • Tuesday, April 5: All-campus anniversary photo from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. outside the Student Center; Campus wide egg hunt (all day).
  • Wednesday, April 6: SCCavenger hunt from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., check in at the ADM Welcome Center; Kite flying on the lawn behind ADM.
  • Thursday, April 7: Spirit day/tailgate party on the SCC baseball field at 12:30 p.m. Game starts at 1 p.m. Free sandwiches from Chick-Fil-A and peanuts from Texas Roadhouse will be provided. Wear your SCC gear!
  • Friday, April 8: "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" Movie on the Lawn, 7 p.m. on the lawn behind HUM and TECH.

In honor of National Library Week, the SCC library will host its 18th Annual Library Book Sale from 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, April 11-12, in the LRC. Used book prices are $0.50 for paperbacks and $1 for hardbacks. The library is collecting used textbooks, novels and other books until Saturday, April 9.

The inaugural "It's Easy Being Green" Expo will take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in the College Center. This is a family-friendly, free, community event that will have environmentally friendly vendors and exhibitors, informative breakout sessions, demonstrations, kids workshops and recycling. Center Stage Theatre will present "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead" at
8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, April 13-16, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, in the FAB theater.
“Dog Sees God” is an unauthorized parody of several characters from a popular comic strip who have become teenagers. All SCC employees are entitled to two free tickets. Contact Jeanine Spence at x8050 for tickets. Otherwise, tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and college students with ID. Tickets will be offered at a special reduced price of $4 for everyone on Wednesday, April 13.

Cheer on the Cougars men's baseball and women's softball teams at the SCC Tailgate Party at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, on the SCC baseball field. Free drinks and food will be provided and there will be free giveaways, courtesy of Student Activities.

The SCC Coffeehouse Open-Mic Night will be at 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, in the SSB auditorium. Poets, authors and songwriters are invited to share their creativity, or just stop by to enjoy the live entertainment along with free coffee and cookies.

SCC Student Activities will host a Community Sit-In Movie Night, featuring "Gnomeo and Juliet," at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 16, on the lawn outside the TECH Building (rain location is the College Center gymnasium). This event is free and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and snacks. Free popcorn will be provided. Contact Mandi Smith at x8469 for more information.

Cheer on your fellow SCC faculty and staff in the NCA Faculty-Staff softball game at 5 p.m. Monday, April 18, on the SCC softball field. Sponsored by the NCA Self-Study Communications Subcommittee, the event is part of the college’s effort to educate us about its Self-Study efforts. Snacks featuring HLC/NCA facts will be provided.

The spring conference of the Rivers Bend Association for the Education of Young Children (RBAEYC) will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. April 15-16 in the SSB. RBAEYC’s annual “Spring Curriculum Conference” and the “Stepping Up to Leadership” preconference event will offer opportunities for early childhood teachers, providers and administrators to enhance their skills and share their experiences.The cost includes lunch and is $55 for the conference, $95 for the preconference event and $130 for both events, if registered online by April 5. Students are now required to present a photo ID when requesting student services from Enrollment Services, Student Development, the Cashier's Office, and the Assessment Center, among others. Photo IDs can be anything from a school ID to a driver's license, or even a gym/club membership ID, as long as it has the student's photo and name on it. This is part of an effort to enhance the security of students' private and confidential information.

The following college representatives will be visiting SCC to discuss transfer requirements (all representatives will have tables set up in the Atrium of the Administration Building):

Summer 2011 and Fall 2011 registration for current and returning students begins Monday,
April 4.

The SCC Phi Beta Lambda Chapter will host "Prep For Success," a series of presentations during the week of April 18-21 that are designed to help students brush up on their job search skills and prepare for the annual SCC Job Fair on May 6. All of the presentations will be in TECH 101, including:

  • Resume Workshop: noon-1 p.m. Monday, April 18
  • Professional Online Presence: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19
  • Mock Interviews: noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 20
  • Dress for Success: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21

A Returning Learners Workshop will take place from 6-9:30 p.m. Monday-Tuesday,
April 25-26, in the Private Dining Room of the Student Center.
