Talking With a Faculty Advisor

Students are required to take CPT 115: Introduction to Data Processing and CPT 106: PC Operating Systems prior to being allowed into the Cisco Networking Academy program or the Computer Repair and Maintenance class. Students are required to take CPT 115, CPT 106, and CPC 150: Networking Fundamentals (or CPC 170: CCNA1-Networking Basics) prior to entering the Microsoft Windows 2000 program. It is not recommended but students who desire will be allowed to take CPC 150 (or CPC 170) concurrently as they begin the Microsoft Windows 2000 program to save time.

What if I have not taken the prerequisite classes listed above but feel that I already have sufficient knowledge about computers? The above required classes may be waived in the following circumstances:

  • You have taken a comparable class at another institution and can provide proof. Check with Admissions for details.
  • You have taken an Assessment Exam in our Assessment Center to test out of the class and receive college credit. Check with the Assessment Center for cost and further details.
  • It has been determined thru talking with a faculty advisor that you have the necessary prerequisite knowledge.
  • You can provide proof that you have earned any of the following industry certifications: MCP, MCSA, MCSE, CCNA, CCNP, A+.

Talking with a faculty advisor is an opportunity to sit down one-on-one with a member of our faculty to determine at what point you should begin your training. Some students come to us with more advanced knowledge, while others do not. It is our desire that you succeed with your training. If you begin with a more advanced class but do not have the required prerequisite knowledge, then you would most likely fail. We want you to succeed!

Before attempting to register for a networking class you must either take the prerequisite classes or fulfill one of the waiver choices listed above.

How do I set up an appointment to talk with a faculty advisor?

Contact Jim Elkins by email at jelkins@stchas.edu or by phone at 636-922-8207 to set up an appointment.

We will determine which classes may be waived (CPT 115, CPT 106, CPC 150 and/or CPC 170). You will be given a Class Add/Drop form with the proper waivers. You must then take the Class Add/Drop form to the Admissions Office to complete your registration and to reserve a place in the class. Talking with a faculty advisor and receiving a waiver does not grant college credit for the class. If you wish to earn a degree or certificate from the college, you must take the class. A waiver serves only to waive the requirement to enter the networking program.
