Statistics

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
The BLS site offers data on all things related to workers in the U.S.: demographics, occupational outlooks, wages, benefits, consumer spending, unemployment, and more. The BLS' Occupational Outlook Handbook is available in hardcopy in the library [REF HB 2593 .A3 O23]
Census Bureau
The Census Bureau collects and makes available data on many topics, including social issues. Social issues can include poverty, ethnicity, housing, and economics. Some data is available by state.
Statistical Abstract of the United States
Browse for the table you need in the index. The Statistical Abstract has loads of statistics on many topics, including crime. [Also available in hardcopy in the library [REF HD 7096 .U6 U82]

Comprehensive Site

Everyday Sociology
A blog with entries written by Ph.D. sociologists, this site, "features interesting, informative, and most of all entertaining commentary from sociologists around the United States." Additional reliable online sources are often linked to within the entries.

This is the sociology page from the Social Science Information Gateway. A gateway site to many other pages on sociology. You can search this site or browse using the subject directory.

U.S. Administration on Aging (AOA)

Children and Families

Urban Institute: a nonpartisan economic and social policy research organization
Reports and statistics on current social policy issues such as welfare, crime, the economy,
elderly, health, ethnicity, gender, housing, and immigration.

Disabilities

MedlinePlus – Disabilities
From the National Library of Medicine, MedlinePlus offers links to authoritative sites relating to disabilities.
Office of Disability, Aging and Long-Term Care Policy
The Office of Disability, Aging, and Long-Term Care Policy, part of the U.S. Department of  Health and Human Services, collects data and prints reports concering all areas of disability, aging, and long-term care policy.

Domestic/Family Violence

Office of Justice Programs (OJP)
From the U.S. Department of Justice, the OJP offers links to information on the various forms of family violence.

Housing and Homelessness

State of the Nation's Housing
An annual report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies (Harvard University) which does a  nice job of reporting on the housing issues facing the U.S.
National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty
The aim of the NLCHP is to prevent and end homelessness. Through their Web site, you can access reports, statistics, and current questions around housing, income, education, civil rights, and homelessness.

Poverty and Welfare Reform

National Poverty Center (NPC)
The nonpartisan, university based NPC conducts research on poverty's causes and consequences. Access their research reports and statistics.
Poverty Guidelines, Research and Measurements
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides data on poverty measurements and links to national poverty research institutes.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
